What is HER Self-Awareness?

"Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards. If you're highly self-aware, you can objectively evaluate yourself, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your values, and understand correctly how others perceive you." -Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund

Self-Awareness is the ability to see ourselves as we are. Not as we or others perceive us, but as we truly are. Unfortunately, when we experience trauma our view of self and the world, become skewed. So much so that we begin to live life with a sole focus of keeping safe, and remaining in what’s familiar to us. Even if what’s familiar to us is painful, unhealthy or even dangerous.

What’s wrong with that Sarabeth, isn’t that a good thing?

Well, yes and no.

Yes, if your drive to be safe is triggered by an actual threat.

No, if your drive to be safe is triggered by a perceived threat. Meaning, you are actually safe, you only feel that you are not.

The only problem is, those who have experienced trauma can not tell the difference between an actual threat and a perceived threat.

These are the moments that rob us of taking life changing calculated risks, cultivating healthy and safe relationships, making wise decisions consistently and cultivating a love and acceptance of self.

Becoming self-aware of this maladaptive process
